YEAR TWO
SeptEMBER 11-13, 2015
Expanding last year’s focus on emerging New York and American talent, Year Two’s lineup includes a wider selection of like-minded innovators from further afield. Friday night’s main stage dives into a program of powerful, hypnotic grooves. Germany’s KASSEM MOSSE will deliver one of his delirious live performances with lush textures stretched atop concussive, loping beats. DJ sets include THE BLACK MADONNA, one of Chicago’s most treasured artists and an advocate for equality in the club community. JUS-ED returns as S-R's first resident; his masterful flow and infectious warmth provided one of last year's highlights. Ugandan-born JENIFA MAYANJA has spent the last fifteen years embedded in NYC's house underground, exploring a timelessly spiritual sound that's made her a fixture of the legendary Body & Soul parties. Japanese duo DOWN BY LOW will spin an enveloping opening set.
A short walk across the basketball courts and down a wooded pathway lies the second stage, which pushes more experimental sounds all weekend. Friday night features live sets from White Material label boss & 909 renegade YOUNG MALE as well as INTERPLANETARY PROPHETS, the collaboration of Afrofuturist journeyman Hieroglyphic Being & Ital. The Bunker's star resident MIKE SERVITO returns to S-R for a set of pure jacking fire late into the night. Bossa Nova Civic Club resident and local favorite VOLVOX DJs and venue owner JOHN BARCLAY opens.
Unfazed by last year’s rain, Saturday begins with a daytime pool party headlined by BEAUTIFUL SWIMMERS. The East Coast favorites weave the kind of buoyant cosmic cuts and new age curveballs that have defined their Future Times label. BLAZER SOUND SYSTEM brings the tape echo-drenched atmospheres of rare dubplates collected on their frequent trips to Jamaica. Matt Werth, head of the groundbreaking NYC label RVNG INTL. sets it off with esoteric & ambient excursions.
On Saturday night, the main stage launches into a full-on visceral assault. UK-born PAULA TEMPLE joins from Berlin, promising rapturously futuristic noise-based techno mayhem. Following her for an extended closing set is Berghain resident and local hero ANTHONY PARASOLE, who summons a tidal wave of monolithic arpeggiations and ecstatic energy. VERONICA VASICKA’s Minimal Wave & Cititrax labels have catalyzed a movement around the secret histories of new wave and industrial, and she channels that unique sensibility into her cyclonic, genre-bending DJ sets. GUNNAR HASLAM will perform a rare live set of mercurial, melodic acid. Switzerland's LUX REC label is known for distinctly modern EBM evolutions, and label boss Daniele Cosmo will open the night with his American debut.
The second stage provides a dreamy contrast. White Material’s GALCHER LUSTWERK joins for a DJ set of his melancholic, seductive, hip hop-inflected house. Live performers include stargazing smudged house auteur TEREKKE, 21-year old VIA APP, who throws conventional genre tropes to the wind and conjures a frenetic world where syrupy chords ooze between bubbly leads and erratic samples. Jealous God’s bewitching 51717 bring us into a darkly erotic space. AURORA HALAL will play a live set of her uniquely psychedelic techno, and THE LONG COUNT CYCLE journey into the depths with an expansive opening set.
Brooklyn's dance duo FLUCT will join select performances with their dystopian, glitching choreography. Reprising last year’s impromptu installation, the NIHITI SPACE provides a meditative escape. Both indoor stages will be equipped with boutique sound from SUBBASS SOUND SYSTEM and immersive lighting installations by NITEMIND.
Sustain-Release is the collaboration between Aurora Halal, artist, musician & creator of Brooklyn's Mutual Dreaming parties, and longtime music writer, promoter, and employee of halcyon, NTS & Underground Quality, Zara Wladawsky. There will be a full bar on-site, and a cantina with a variety of food options. Local partners include Bossa Nova Civic Club. Camp Lakota is a summer camp nestled among the Catskills Mountains in Wurtsboro, NY. Year Two tickets are limited to 700 at $120-165.
